CARBONDALE, Ill. - IPFW women's volleyball player Anna Wrede became the first player in program history to record double-digit blocks in back-to-back matches, but it was not enough as the Mastodons fell to Kansas State 3-1 (20-25, 26-28, 25-19, 20-25).
IPFW led multiple times in the first three sets against a Wildcat team that received votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. All total, the two teams exchanged 16 leads and tied the score 35 times in the match.
Wrede put down 14 blocks, including three solo, tying her total from the previous match against Marshall. The mark is second-most in program history and tied for sixth best in Summit League history. She also had career-high six kills in the match and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Somer Johnson earned her second career double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Emily Spencer finished the afternoon with her 56th career double-double, making 14 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Spencer also improved her school record to 31 consecutive matches in double-digit kills.
Kendall Wienkes and Sarah Heckman each had eight kills and five blocks, while Monica Hall had a season-high seven kills. Wienkes also finished with 13 digs. Madison Spence led IPFW with 25 assists and Mallory Slyder dished out 22.
In the opening set, the Mastodons and Wildcats battled through seven lead changes. With IPFW leading 17-16, Kansas State used a 6-1 run to take the set. IPFW had set point in the second set at 25-24, but a 4-1 KSU swing gave the Wildcats the two-set advantage.
IPFW led by as many as six points in the third set as the Mastodons closed out the win on a 5-1 run. Trailing by five early in the fourth set, the 'Dons scored five consecutive points to tie the score at 12-12. Kansas State countered with an 8-3 run as IPFW was unable to make a final rally.
Despite the loss, the Mastodons finished with more kills (58-to-55), a better hitting percentage (.185-to-.168) and more blocks (19-to-14) than KSU.
After spending the first three weeks on the road, IPFW will play its first home match on September 17 against Ball State with first serve set for 7 p.m.
