Women's Volleyball Split On Final Day Of Flyer-Raider Invite

DAYTON, Ohio - The IPFW women's volleyball team earned a split to close out its weekend at the Flyer-Raider Invitational, falling to Eastern Kentucky 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-22) and defeating Bowling Green 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-18). The Mastodon's record now sits at 5-1 on the season.
Emily Spencer led IPFW on the day with 25 kills and 16 digs. With her 25 kills, Spencer moved into third place on the all-time Summit League kills list. She also added four blocks and three aces and was named to the All-Tournament team. Kendall Wienkes finished the afternoon hitting a team-bed .455 with 19 kills, seven digs, and three aces. Sarah Heckman finished with a team-high seven blocks to go along with 18 kills. Somer Johnson contributed 11 kills while Hailie Ripley added 10 kills and four blocks.
Mallory Slyder dished out a team-best 65 assists in the two matches. Este Stoffel and Olivia Hahn led the defensive effort for the 'Dons with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
In the opening set against EKU, the two sides battled through eight lead changes and 14 tie scores. With IPFW leading 24-23, the Colonels scored three straight points to take the set.
IPFW again led late into the second set, before Eastern Kentucky scored the final five points. The Mastodons took an early in the third set, but an 11-3 run by the Colonels gave them the lead for good and the match.
Against the Falcons, the first set was again a tough bout. With the score tied 13-13, IPFW closed out the opening frame on a 12-6 run. The second set was all Mastodons as they never trailed from the opening serve.
The final set of the weekend saw BGSU taking the early lead. Trailing 15-14, IPFW rattled off six consecutive points, four by Wienkes alone, as the 'Dons won 11 of the final 14 points to earn the sweep.
IPFW heads back to the court on September 9, traveling to Eastern Michigan for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
