Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Season-Ending Loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball team nearly fought back from a 23-point second-half deficit, climbing back to within as few as three in the final minute; however, the Mastodons could not overcome the full margin, falling in the season finale by an 82-77 score to the Evansville Aces in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Steve Forbes scored a team-high 20 points, while Isaiah McCray scored 19, Joe Edwards 13, and Max Landis 10. Mo Evans scored eight while dishing out six assists and nabbing a pair of steals. Three players: Forbes, McCray, and Edwards pulled down five rebounds, each, while Forbes and McCray blocked two shots apiece.
IPFW led briefly in the first half, when McCray drained a three-point basket to put IPFW ahead by one, before Evansville guard D.J. Balentine took the game over, scoring 22 points over a 10-minute span in which he was perfect from the field, pushing the Purple Aces to a 13-point, 30-17 advantage.
The Evansville first-half lead grew to as many as 16 when UE's Blake Simmons drained a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to play in the half, sending the hosts into the locker room with a 43-27 advantage.
Evansville scored nine of the first 11 points in the second half, and led by 23 with 14:40 to play in the game before the Mastodons started their comeback, using an immediate 9-1 run behind a trio of McCray three-pointers to close the gap to 15 with just over 13 minutes to play in the game.
The Mastodon deficit rose to 17 with 8:18 to play before IPFW ran off nine straight points on a Landis three-pointer, an Edwards three-point play, and an Evans three-pointer, and eventually fought back to three after a pair of Edwards free throws with nine seconds to play; however, the Mastodons could not close the entire way, falling 82-77.
IPFW hit 27-of-58 from the field (46.6%) and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from long range, but benefited from a strong-shooting second half in which the Mastodons hit 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field and 8-of-14 (57.1%) from beyond the arc.
Evansville hit half of its 60 field goal tries, and went 8-of-15 (53.3%) from beyond the arc. Balentine ended with a game-high 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field, while Egidiju Mockevicius went for 15 points and 10 rebounds.
