Mastodons Out-Shoot Panthers, but Fall 3-1
9/4/2015 5:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Despite holding a 19-to-17 advantage in shot attempts, the IPFW women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Eastern Illinois Panthers on a hot, humid match at Lakeside Field.
"Starting winless through the first quarter of the season is never an easy thing to accept or understand, but we saw bright spots from a few of the players including Brooke Bishir, Rachel Good, and Paityn Fleming," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "If we can continue to push on and work together for a full match, the goals and results will eventually start to come. All season we have told the players to believe in themselves and the process. Everything we are doing is geared towards October 2 in our Summit League opener. The coaching staff believes in the team immensely, and we hope they see it in themselves as well, despite the early record this season."
IPFW out-shot the Panthers 10-to-7 in the first half, while EIU held a 10-9 lead in shots in the second half. Bishir scored her first goal of the 2015 season, off of an assist from Good for the team's only goal of the match. Good led the team with five shots - two on goal - as Kallianne Mogler had four and Mayson Whitman three. Starting goalkeeper Kiley Dunning picked up seven saves in nearly 67 minutes of action.
The Mastodons threatened early, as a Whitman shot attempt hit the post 15 seconds into the match, and IPFW had numerous near-misses in the opening 45 minutes. During a five minute span in the opening half, the Mastodons got a strong shot attempt from Andie Lazzerini, a Good narrow miss in her attempt at an upper-90 goal, with Whitman missing just left on a counter opportunity.
The teams wasted little time in the second half finding the scoreboard, as just over three and a half minutes into the second half Eastern Illinois broke the scoreless tie, before scoring again in the 56th minute and 59th minute of the match.
The Mastodons reached the scoreboard with 10:34 to play in the match when Good found Bishir in front of the goal, and beat the Eastern Illinois goalkeeper towards the left post. The Mastodons kept the pressure on through the remaining 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net in the 3-1 loss.
The Mastodons stay in the Midwest and travel to Saint Louis, Missouri, to battle with the Saint Louis Billikens in a 2 p.m. (ET) first-touch.
