IPFW Falls At San Diego State 79-55, Finishes Season 24-10

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Malik Pope scored 15 points to lead No. 2 seed San Diego State University to a 79-55 victory past No. 7 seed IPFW in the first round of the 2016 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Tuesday night at Viejas Arena in San Diego, California. Winston Shepard added the first triple-double in San Diego State history with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high 12 assists for the host Aztecs (26-9), regular season champions of the Mountain West Conference. Senior Joe Reed/Greenwood scored a game-high 17 points for the visiting Mastodons (24-10), regular season co-champions of The Summit League. Graduate student Max Landis/Indianapolis added 14 points for IPFW, while redshirt-freshman John Konchar/West Chicago, Ill. posted his 14th double-double with 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, adding a game-high six steals, as well. The Mastodons completed their historic and memorable 2015-16 campaign with the second-most wins in school history, and only the sixth 20-win season in 43 years of competition in the sport.
IPFW, making its first-ever appearance in the NIT, took early leads of 3-0 and 6-5 at San Diego State behind two quick three-point field goals by Landis, the second at 16:11. It would prove to be the only leads of the contest for the visiting Mastodons against the talented and athletic Aztecs, who were taller with more length at each position. Reed's conventional three-point play inside at 12:17 had the visitors within 10-9, but the hosts rattled off nine unanswered points to lead 19-9 at 9:46. A layup by Konchar at 8:05 made it 21-13, before SDSU put together a 15-2 run to lead 36-15 at 2:23. A steal and slam dunk from Konchar made it 40-22 at halftime.
San Diego State maintained its comfortable margin throughout the second half, leading 57-29 at 11:45, after another quick 9-0 run. The Aztecs extended their advantage to 30 points for the first time at 69-39 with 5:36 remaining on a pair of free throws by Shepard. SDSU took its largest lead of the night at 76-43 with 2:46 on the clock. IPFW continued battling throughout, as it has all season, and outscored the hosts 12-3 over the final 2:32. Reed made four late free throws, Landis added his fourth three-pointer, Konchar had his third dunk of the game and freshman Kason Harrell/Pittsburgh came off the bench and made a three-pointer to close the scoring.
Reed led IPFW with his game-high 17 points in his final game for the Mastodons, adding five rebounds. Landis added 14 points, including four three-pointers, along with three rebounds in his final game for IPFW. Konchar finished with 10 points and his game-high 18 rebounds for his 14th collegiate double-double, adding a game-high six steals, as well as four assists. IPFW shot 31% (19-61) from the field, including 28% (7-25) on three-pointers and 91% (10-11) at the free throw line. The Mastodons did have an 11-8 advantage in second chance points against the Aztecs.
Pope led San Diego State with his 15 points, adding eight rebounds. Shepard added 10 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high 12 assists for his triple-double for the Aztecs. Dakarai Allen also had 10 points for the hosts. SDSU shot 53% (32-50) from the field, including 41% (9-22) on three-pointers and 60% (6-10) at the line. The Aztecs had advantages of 40-24 in points scored in the paint, 24-2 in points off turnovers and 36-12 in bench points.
IPFW and San Diego State were playing for just the third time since 2001-02, and the Aztecs lead the series, 3-0.
Reed played in a school-record 132 games at IPFW, participating in a school-record 81 wins over the past four years. He scored 1,037 career points to rank 10th all-time, adding 602 career rebounds to rank 4th all-time.
Landis played just two seasons at IPFW, but scored 916 points in 63 games with 165 three-pointers to rank 6th all-time, adding 193 assists. He scored 638 points this season, the 2nd-best season in school history, making a new school-record 125 three-pointers during 2015-16.
Senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. also concluded his two-year IPFW career, scoring 486 points in 65 games. He also made 78 three-pointers in his two seasons, adding 194 rebounds and 121 assists.
Konchar grabbed a new school-record 313 rebounds (9.2) this season to go along with his 441 points, 92 assists and 71 steals, tying the 5th-best theft mark in school history.
The 24 wins this season by the Mastodons rank second in school history, only behind the 25 wins of 2013-14 (25-11).
IPFW has posted 65 wins over the past three seasons, advancing to three consecutive post-season tournaments for the first-time ever, including the 2014 and 2015 CollegeInsider.com Tournament in addition to this year's first-ever NIT appearance.
