8/18/2017 7:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - Despite holding the Cardinals scoreless in the second half, the Fort Wayne women's soccer team began the regular season with a 2-0 loss to in-state rival Ball State on Friday (Aug. 18) at Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals struck early in the first half, netting a goal in the 13th minute off a corner kick. Sam Kambol got the score, and was followed another Ball State goal 14 minutes later. Evie Stepaniak put the ball in the net after beating Haley Lydon in the six-yard box.
Kendall Quinn had the best opportunity to score in the first half for the Mastodons; she took a shot from just past the 18-yard box, but the Cardinal keeper controlled it. Her five minutes off the bench in the first half earned her the second half start.
In the second half, Hannah Kroger took a corner kick that Jessica Shoenfeldt headed in the box, but the Cardinal keeper handled it. Chani Warfield had a breakaway with three minutes left, but her shot attempt was saved.
Ball State starts the season 1-0, while Fort Wayne begins 0-1. The Mastodons retake the field on Sunday at home at 1 p.m. as the Detroit Mercy Titans visit Hefner Field.
