8/26/2017 10:28:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team split the final day of its Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place. The Mastodons fell to SIUE 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-14) in the morning match, before defeating Toledo 3-1 (14-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-23) in the nightcap. For their performances during the tournament, Fort Wayne's Nicole Rightnowar and Victoria Mills were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Mastodons came out on fire in the early match as they scored the first four points. It was all 'Dons in the set as they scored the final four points, capped off by an ace from Rightnowar. The second set saw the Cougars take the early lead and not let up as they won the set.
Tied early in the third set, SIUE scored three straight points to take an 8-5 lead, as Fort Wayne was unable to come back late. The Mastodons went up early in the fourth set with five of the first seven points, but the 'Dons were unable to hang on as the Cougars went on a 9-1 run to take the set and the match.
Against SIUE, Elizabeth Fuerst led the way with a match-high 13 kills while Rightnowar added 12 kills. Mills dished out a match-high 36 assists and Julia Wayer had a match-high 14 digs.
In the nightcap, Toledo scored the first point of the opening set as the Rockets never trailed. The second set was hotly contested as there were four lead changes and 13 tie scores. Trailing 24-23, Fort Wayne used a kill from Katie Crowe and back-to-back kills by Sydney Boerst to finish off the second-set victory.
The two teams exchanged early leads in the third set before the 'Dons used a 3-0 and then 4-0 run to take the lead and eventually the set. It was another competitive set in the fourth with 11 ties and five lead changes. Trailing midway through, the Mastodons put together a 7-1 run, including five straight points. That lead would evaporate as Toledo held a 23-22 advantage before a kill by Crowe, a Toledo error and finally a kill from Wayer ended the match in favor of the 'Dons.
