Women's Volleyball Sweeps Opening Day of YSU Tournament

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team swept the opening day of the Courtyard Marriott-Canfield Penguin Invitational, defeating host Youngstown State 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17) and Akron 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14).
In the opener, Lauren Hoffman led the 'Dons with a match-high 13 kills and six blocks. Nicole Rightnowar earned her third straight double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, to go along with two aces. Madison Jaqua also earned her second straight double-double with a match-high 42 assists and adding 15 digs. Sydney Boerst and Elizabeth Fuerst each finished with nine kills, while Fuerst added 12 digs. Elizabeth Britner had a match-high 19 digs for the Mastodons.
Fort Wayne held an early lead in the first set against YSU, but the Penguins went on a 9-1 run to take the lead and the set. The roles were reversed in the second set as Youngstown State held a late lead 18-16. This time, the Mastodons rallied to close out the frame on a 9-4 advantage. Down 10-4 in the third, the 'Dons put together another run, out-scoring the Penguins 13-2 to win the set. The Mastodons scored the first three points of the final set as the 'Dons never trailed, winning the set and the match.
In the second match against the Zips, Rightnowar again led the Mastodons with her second double-double the day with a match-high 14 kills and 13 digs. Natalie Seiler finished with 12 kills to go along with a match-high seven blocks, including three solo. Boerst also added 12 kills while Hoffman had 10. Jaqua dished out a match-high 45 assists while Britner had a match-high 16 digs.
Akron scored the first point of the nightcap, but it was all Fort Wayne from there. The Mastodons responded with a 6-1 advantage before closing out the opening set victory on a 9-2 run. Tied 11-11 in the second, the 'Dons scored four of the next five points to take the lead for good. In the third and tied 19-19, the Zips rattled off four consecutive points to win the set. The Mastodons opened the final set by scoring three of the first four points as the route was on as they closed out the match with a 7-1 run.
