Dayton Rallies For 91-80 Victory Over Purdue Fort Wayne
11/16/2018 9:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball held an eight-point second half lead and led for nearly 20 minutes of Friday's (Nov. 16) 91-80 loss at Dayton.
In the contest, John Konchar picked up his 1,500th career point and 400th career assist. He finished the game with 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and one steal.
The Mastodons connected on five of their first nine attempts from beyond the arc to help jump out to a quick advantage.
Dayton responded with back-to-back old school 3-point plays around the seven-minute mark of the first half. It put the Flyers up 30-25. But a 7-0 stretch by the 'Dons in the final minutes helped make it a 47-42 Mastodon lead at the break.
The 'Dons held a lead for the first seven minutes of the second half until Dayton took the lead 65-64 on a Jalen Crutcher free throw with 12:21 left.
With 2:56 left in the game, and down 84-78, the 'Dons had a chance to cut the deficit to a single possession. But a transition 3-point attempt by Kason Harrell in the corner was no good.
A Matt Holba layup put the 'Dons down 85-80 with 2:25 remaining in the game. Down the stretch a key offensive rebound by Dayton with just over a minute remaining led to a basket for the Flyers, and a seven-point Mastodon deficit with less than 60 seconds left.
Harrell finished tied with Dayton's Josh Cunningham for a game-high 20 points. Harrell made four 3-pointers in the game.
Holba added 12 points and five rebounds. Dylan Carl totaled a season-high 11 points thanks to three 3-pointers.
The Mastodons shot 51 percent (31-of-61) from the floor. Dayton shot 61 percent (34-of-56).
Purdue Fort Wayne forced 13 Dayton turnovers, with seven coming on Mastodon steals.
Dayton improves to 3-0. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 2-3. The 'Dons are back in action Tuesday (Nov. 20) vs. South Carolina State. Tip at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
