Samford Edges Purdue Fort Wayne Down The Stretch

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – John Konchar scored 24 points with nine rebounds but Purdue Fort Wayne fell 74-66 to Samford on Friday (Nov. 23) evening at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The game came down to the final minutes with the Mastodons earning two looks in the final 30 seconds to tie the game. First it was Matt Holba missing on a jumper. Konchar gathered the rebound but his contested put back attempt was no good. Samford added six free throws from there to pad the final margin.
It was a game of runs as a Konchar 3-pointer gave the Mastodons a 26-18 lead with 7:55 left in the first half. Samford took a timeout and out-scored the 'Dons 24-10 for the rest of the half. It gave Samford a 42-36 lead at the break
The second half saw the 'Dons take the lead back quickly with a 9-1 run. The 'Dons held the lead until 11 minutes remained and Samford went up 55-54 on a Josh Sharkey 3-pointer. It was part of an 11-0 Samford run that saw the 'Dons fall behind 60-54.
In the end, the contest would come down to the final minutes. Konchar drained a 3-pointer with 2:48 left to put the 'Dons down 68-66 but it would be Purdue Fort Wayne's final points.
Konchar's 24 points pushed his career total to 1,543 to take third place in program history. He passed previously third place Mo Evans who had 1,522 points from 2013-17.
Kason Harrell had 14 points and matched a career high with five assists.
The loss snaps a streak of 24 consecutive non-conference regular season home games won by the Mastodons. The last time the Mastodons lost such a game was Dec. 30, 2014 against Cal Poly 71-57.
The 'Dons forced 19 turnovers and recorded 14 offensive rebounds. Purdue Fort Wayne shot 37.7 percent (23-of-62) from the floor. Samford shot the ball at 51.9 percent (27-of-52).
Samford improves to 6-1 with the win. The 'Dons fall to 3-4 and are back in action on Sunday at Cleveland State.
