Miami Edges Purdue Fort Wayne Down The Stretch 85-79
12/8/2018 5:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Ohio – John Konchar recorded his 40th career double-double in Purdue Fort Wayne's 85-79 loss at Miami on Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon. Konchar finished with season highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds in the contest.
Konchar now has double-doubles in four consecutive games. The last time a Mastodon recorded four straight double-doubles was Konchar in January 2017.
The Mastodons would have their toughness tested early after Miami led by as many as 12 points in the first half. This was due in large part to Miami's hot start from beyond the arc. The Redhawks made seven of their first nine from three.
However by the time the first 20 minutes concluded it was just a one-point Miami lead at 45-44.
The 'Dons grabbed their first lead of the second half thanks to a 9-0 run part of a larger 17-5 push. It put the 'Dons up 69-63 with 8:48 left. Back came Miami, with 10 straight points to take a 73-69 lead. Matt Holba ended it with a basket inside and then Konchar made a one-handed circus shot. He was fouled on the play and converted the free throw to put the 'Dons up 74-73 with 3:41 left.
In a second half of runs, it would be an 8-0 Miami run that followed after Konchar's shot to put the game in the Redhawks' corner.
Konchar finished the game 10-of-18 from the floor while adding an 8-of-9 performance from the line. Konchar now has 607 made field goals in his career. He is just one behind the program record for made field goals held by Bruce Roland (1986-89). Roland had 608 baskets.
Kason Harrell added 15 points on Saturday for Purdue Fort Wayne. The game had seven lead changes and four ties. The 'Dons held a 23-14 edge in bench points.
Nike Sibande recorded 24 points for Miami.
Miami improves to 6-4. The 'Dons fall to 6-6. Purdue Fort Wayne takes the week off for finals before hitting the court again on Saturday (Dec. 15) at Austin Peay.
