Mastodons' Comeback Falls Short to Western Michigan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne's comeback against Western Michigan came up just short on Friday night (Aug. 30). The women's volleyball team fell to the Broncos 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 15-12 on Arnie Ball Court on the opening day of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place.
In the first two games of the tournament, Western Michigan topped South Alabama 3-0, and Northern Kentucky beat South Alabama 3-1.
In the nightcap, Western Michigan used .333 and .316 hitting percentages in the opening two sets to go up big. Purdue Fort Wayne answered by holding the Broncos to .108 in the third. Sydney Boerst and Sidney Schiller were forces at the net all evening, blocking nine and six attacks, respectively. After coming off the bench in the first two sets, freshman Rachael Crucis suited up in the libero jersey for the rest of the night and totaled 25 digs.
In set three, the Mastodons jumped out to a 9-5 lead thanks to a four-point run. Despite a five-point push from WMU, the Mastodons rattled off four straight, capped off by a block from Schiller and Boerst. The fourth set was back and fourth, with 14 ties and four lead changes throughout. Madelyn Wurster and Sandra Hoevels had back-to-back kills to end the set.
In the fifth, WMU led 5-2 early on and went wire-to-wire to take the match.
Wurster and Schiller led the attack for the Mastodons, notching 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Madison Gates picked up her first-career double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs. Kendyll Gebert saw her first action as a Mastodon, racking up 15 assists off the bench.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-1 and Western Michigan improves to 2-0. The second day of the tournament begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning (Aug. 31). Purdue Fort Wayne will play in the first match against South Alabama, followed by Northern Kentucky and Western Michigan's match at 1:30. The Mastodons play at 7 p.m. against Northern Kentucky in the last match of the tournament.
