'Dons Host Leathernecks to Open Final Summit League Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women volleyball opens its final season in the Summit League on Tuesday (Sept. 24) with Western Illinois on Arnie Ball Court.

Scouting Western Illinois
The Leathernecks are 3-10, and are coming into their matchup with the 'Dons on a seven-match losing streak. WIU's last win came against Jackson State in SEMO's Redhawks Invitational on September 7. Western Illinois has a pair of attackers in JoJo Kruize and Mariah Mitchell that average over two kills per set.
1,500th Match? W of Course
Purdue Fort Wayne had its 1,500th program match last weekend at the SIUE Cougar Classic. The Mastodons beat Central Arkansas in five sets. The Mastodons have a winning percentage over .600 over the course of the program's 42-year history.
Digging Her Way to the Top
Rachael Crucis currently leads the Summit League in digs per set at 4.69. During the week in which the Mastodons played Eastern Michigan and three teams at the Cougar Classic, she averaged over five digs per set.
No Mid-Life Crucis Here!
Rachael Crucis has had at least 20 digs in five contests this season. She had 25 digs off the bench against Western Michigan in her first collegiate outing, 23 in the Mastodons' comeback against UC Riverside, and 24 in the 'Dons win over Eastern Illinois. She also had 32 against Central Arkansas and 25 at SIUE in the Cougar Classic.
Crowe and Fuerst Are Now Classics
Thanks to the performances of Katie Crowe and Elizabeth Fuerst, the Mastodons went 3-0 at the Cougar Classic. Both Mastodons were named to the All-Tournament team, with Crowe earning the Tournament MVP distinction.
Comeback Baby!
After dropping the first two sets to UC Riverside 25-7, 25-23, Purdue Fort Wayne won the last three sets 25-23, 29-27, 16-14. Elizabeth Fuerst had 13 kills to lead the team, followed by Madelyn Wurster and Katie Crowe who each had 12. Sydney Boerst had seven blocks to lead the Mastodon defense.
All Them Double-Doubles
Madison Gates has seven double-doubles so far this season, including three consecutive double-doubles through the first three matches of the season. These are the first five double-doubles of her career.
On the Double... Double!
Katie Crowe has 25 double-doubles in three years with the Mastodons, 11 of which came in 2018. Of the 23, 15 of them came on Arnie Ball Court. Crowe has six double-doubles so far this season.
Hittin' High
Sydney Boerst currently ranks second in program history in career hitting percentage at .318. She is the leader in the rally scoring era (2001-present), and only trails Andi Reichart (.362) overall.
Between a Block and a Hard Place
Sydney Boerst holds a 0.94 blocks per set average for her career, which ranks sixth in program history. The next three on the list are Jami Brown, Hailie Ripley and Jenny Miller, who all averaged 0.96 blocks per set in their careers.
