‘Dons Set DI Era Program Record For Fewest Points Allowed In a Half
2/26/2020 10:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball celebrated Senior Night with a 58-51 victory over Denver on Wednesday (Feb. 26) evening at the Gates Sports Center. Matt Holba and Marcus DeBerry were honored prior to the contest.
The Mastodons took the court after the pregame ceremony and went right to work on the defensive end. When the first half was over the 'Dons allowed only 14 points to Denver. It set a new Mastodon program record for fewest points allowed in a half to a Division I school. The previous low to a Division I school was 15.
All told it was a 31-14 lead for the 'Dons at the break. Denver was limited to 6-of-28 shooting (21.4 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. It was reminiscent of the first half at Denver earlier this year when the 'Dons limited the Pioneers to 19 first-half points.
The second half saw the Pioneers open the frame making four of their first five attempts from long range. While the Pioneers had the quick run to start the second half they never advanced within a single possession until the final minute. At that point freshman Deonte Billups went to work. His 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down, set up by a pass from Holba, put the 'Dons up 55-49 with 42 seconds left. It would be all the breathing room the 'Dons would need.
Billups finished with a career-high 21 points while adding nine rebounds including five on the offensive end. He also had three assists. The freshman was 7-of-13 from the field.
Junior Dylan Carl notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The 51 points Denver scored for the game is the Mastodons' best defensive effort against a Division I opponent since allowing 51 to UIC on Nov. 18, 2017.
The Mastodons sweep the season series from Denver and move to 13-17 (6-9 Summit League). Denver falls to 6-23 (2-13 Summit League).
Purdue Fort Wayne closes out the regular season on Saturday at Oral Roberts.
