Reitano's PK Goal Leads To Second Straight Win For 'Dons
10/14/2021 10:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A first half penalty kick goal from Bella Reitano would be the difference maker as the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team defeated Youngstown State 1-0 on Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Mastodons allowed just one shot on goal in the contest.
With the win, the Mastodons' record improves to 5-6-4 overall and 4-4 in Horizon League play. With the loss, the Penguins' record drops to 2-9-4 and 2-3-3 in conference play. The four wins in conference play are the most for the 'Dons since 2012 when they went 5-2-1 in Summit League play.
The Mastodons move into fifth place in the Horizon League standings with 12 points with three games remaining in conference play. The top six teams make it into the Horizon League tournament, with seeds three and four hosting an on campus quarterfinals game on Oct. 31. The Mastodons also hosted their annual pink out game on Thursday.
Reitano scored the lone Mastodon goal in the 31st minute thanks to a handball inside of the goalkeeper's box. Reitano struck the ball past the diving Brooklyn Kirkpatrick to the top left part of the net. The goal would be her third on the season, which is good for second on the team. With Kirkpatrick out of position, Kayla Shebar had a chance to extend the 'Dons lead in the 81st minute, but her shot sailed just high of the net. The 'Dons would play strong defense throughout the game, and held the Penguins to just four shots in each half. The 'Dons are now 5-1 when either Bella or Morgan Reitano scores a goal. The sisters have combined for nine of the Mastodons' 18 goals on the season.
The 'Dons owned a 9-8 shots advantage and a 3-1 shots on goal advantage. The last time the 'Dons held an opponent to one shot on goal was back on Aug. 29, 2016 against Eastern Illinois. Reitano led the 'Dons in shots with three and had one shot on goal as well. Samantha Castaneda had one save on the night and earned her fourth shutout of the season. The mark is tied for second in the Horizon League.
The Mastodons will be back in action in Green Bay, Wis. on Sunday, Oct. 17 (noon) in a Horizon League game against Green Bay. The Phoenix are fourth in the Horizon League standings with 13 points. With a win, the 'Dons would leap the Phoenix in the standings and have sole possession of fourth place.
