INDIANAPOLIS - On Tuesday, February 9, Katie Crowe and the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team shut down IUPUI for their second 3-0 win over the Jaguars in as many days. The 'Dons beat IUPUI 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 behind 22 kills from Crowe.
Crowe was spectacular against the Jaguars, registering the third-most kills in a three-set match by any player in the NCAA during the 2020-21 season. This includes matches that were played in the fall of 2020. In addition to her kill total, she was able to work efficiently, as she hit .541. The reigning Horizon League Player of the Week paired her 22 kills with eight digs and a pair of blocks.
Crowe continues to lead the Horizon League, averaging 4.42 kills per set.
Purdue Fort Wayne's offense was blazing in the second matchup, as the 'Dons hit .384 (47-9-99) as a team. This marks their best offensive night of the season. Madison Gates paced the offense with a career-high 37 assists.
The Mastodons were a little slow to get going in the beginning of each set, but used big runs to take over the match. In the first, it was a 6-0 run that featured five kills from Crowe and one from Sidney Schiller. A 5-1 push later on had another four kills from Crowe, who finished with 10 in the first set alone. IUPUI tied it up at 20, but the 'Dons ran away with the opening frame after a kill from Ramei Jackson, an ace from Rachael Crucis and a kill from Schiller.
In set two, it looked as though IUPUI was getting in the groove of the match. After trading some early runs, the Jaguars led 23-18, but Sydney Boerst nearly single-handedly kept the Mastodons in the set. The senior middle blocker got a kill, a block with Crowe, a kill, and a solo block in a row. Schiller served the rest of the way, producing a 7-0 run to close the set.
IUPUI led 7-5 early in the third, but from that point on, it was all 'Dons. Madelyn Wurster had four of her eight kills in set three, pairing perfectly with Crowe's five. Wurster went error-free for the match, with eight kills on 13 attempts for a .615 clip. Julia Wayer picked up a couple aces off the bench, as did her libero teammates. Alexandra Traciak and Crucis both had aces in the third. The third was the Mastodons' best from a hitting perspective, as they went 14-1-29 for .448.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-2, 4-2 Horizon, while IUPUI falls to 0-6, 0-6. The Mastodons occupy sole possession of the third spot in the Horizon League standings as the only team at 4-2. UIC and Wright State are 6-0. The Mastodons will return home next week to play Robert Morris on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 15-16). Monday's contest will be the first Mastodon athletic event of Pink Week to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation.
