Men’s Soccer Season Opener Goes to Northern Illinois 1-0

DEKALB, Ill. – Purdue Fort Wayne's first win of the season will have to wait for another day. The Huskies defeated the Mastodons 1-0 on Thursday (Aug. 26) in a non-league men's soccer contest.
The match was scoreless for 71 minutes before the Huskies got on the board in the 72nd minute. Enrique Banuelos scored the goal for the Huskies.
Northern Illinois earned the majority of the shots in the first half, but the second half was tighter. NIU held a 9-5 edge in shots in the second and just a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
The Mastodons' best chance to score came in the 53rd minute. Keith Larson used a bicycle kick off a corner kick to put the ball on the frame. It clanked off the crossbar and the game stayed scoreless.
Larson finished with two shots for the 'Dons with one on goal in addition to his one that hit the woodwork. Ali Nasser added a shot on goal for the 'Dons.
Erik Josson made eight saves for the 'Dons. Martin Sanchez earned the shutout for Northern Illinois.
The 'Dons fall to 0-1-0 while the Huskies move to 1-0-0. Purdue Fort Wayne will return to action on Sunday (Aug. 29) against Bellarmine.
