Mastodons Bumped by SIUE in Five Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite out-hitting the Cougars, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its regular season opener to SIUE 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 14-25, 25-19, 15-11) on the first day (Friday, August 27) of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational presented by Sonesta Select.
The Mastodons finished the match with a .196-.173 edge in hitting percentage and a 58-41 advantage in kills.
The first set saw the Mastodons go on a 6-1 run with three kills from Maggie Castleman and an ace from Sidney Schiller. Schiller got the set-winning kill after a 3-0 push from SIUE. The Mastodons held the Cougars to a .000 hitting percentage thanks to a 6-6-32 performance from SIUE. In set two, the Cougars jumped out to a 16-8 that gave them the cushion necessary to even the score at one set each.
Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 10-0 run in the third set behind a service stretch from freshman Claire Pape. In this run, Purdue Fort Wayne got a pair of kills from each of Castleman and Schiller and a block from Castleman and Ramei Jackson. After a pair of points from SIUE, the 'Dons finished the set on a 5-1 run that had four kills from four different players and an ace from Viviana Lefherz.
The fourth set had runs go both directions, but SIUE had a 6-1 stretch that pushed the Cougars' lead to 19-12. Pape picked up another of her four aces before SIUE finished the frame on a 4-1 push to go into the fifth set.
Purdue Fort Wayne led 10-9 in the final frame after a pair of kills from Katie Crowe, but SIUE closed the match on a 6-1 run.
Crowe led the match with 17 kills while also pitching in 10 digs for her double-double. Madison Gates had 30 assists and 12 digs for a double-double as well. Castleman finished with 13 kills and a .308 hitting clip, while Rachael Crucis led the match with 18 digs. SIUE got 11 kills each from Annie Ellis, Sydney Hummert and Julia Treichel.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-1 to start the season while the Cougars improve to 1-1 after dropping their opening match with Evansville in the morning game. The Mastodons will be back in action on Saturday morning (August 28) at 11 a.m. in the Hilliard Gates Sports Center for a match against Evansville. The 'Dons will play the nightcap of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational against Kent State at 7 p.m.
