FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball head coach Maria Marchesano welcomed two players into her program this signing period with Erin Woodson and Renna Schwieterman signing NLIs.
"As a staff we are so excited about the two ladies we are getting in our '23 class," Marchesano said. "Both girls have their different strengths, but the common trait they have between them is that they play so hard on both ends of the floor and don't take plays off. They both play with a chip on their shoulder and it doesn't matter who they're facing, they're the same game in and game out.
Woodson (6-0, Guard) comes from Richmond, Virginia where she played for Saint Gertrude High School. She passed the 1,000-point mark as a junior after averaging 21.6 points per game in her third season. She also added 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.4 assists per game in her most recent season. Woodson was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association after earning First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Metro. She was the Saint Gertrude Athlete of the Year and was the MVP for the STATVA Tournament and Benedictine Capital City Classic Tournament. Woodson is ranked the fifth-best shooting guard and No. 25 player overall in the state by Prep Girls Hoops Virginia. The High Honors student led the Gators to the state championship in 2021 and the state semifinal the year after. She played AAU ball for Adidas Elevate Elite, leading her team to a No. 6 ranking in the U-17 circuit.
"Erin has a pure stroke and a sneaky knack at being in the right spot on the defensive end," Marchesano said. "Every time we see Erin play she gets better and better and we are excited to watch her develop in our systems."
Schwieterman (6-0, Forward) is a Jay County High School product that averaged 17.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game last season. She was most recently named an Indiana Junior All-Star last spring. Schwieterman is a three-time First Team All-Conference selection and a two-time Hilliard Gates MVP in the Allen County Athletic Conference. She was also picked as an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Underclass All-State honoree in 2020-21, then followed it up with a First Team All-State honor for all players in 2021-22. Schwieterman led her team to the Allen County Athletics Conference title in 2020-21 and 2021-22. She is a member of the student council and National Honor Society. She also played softball and was a Second-Team All-Conference selection in 2021. The dual-sport athlete played club ball with Always 100 from 2018-22.
"Getting a local Indiana All-Star in Renna is a huge get for our program," Marchesano said. "Renna brings a versatile 'position-less' game to our program along with good size, strength and athleticism. Her competitive nature is contagious and she's fun to watch."
Woodson and Schwieterman will join the Mastodons in the summer of 2023. The current Mastodons are in action on Thursday (Nov. 17) with Chicago State visiting the Gates Sports Center.
