Men’s Basketball Earns Road Win at Youngstown State 76-71

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne picked up a 76-71 victory at Youngstown State on Saturday (Dec. 31) in Horizon League play.
Purdue Fort Wayne led for the majority of the contest, nearly 34 minutes to be exact. As is often the case in league games it was an exchange of runs that decided the game on Saturday. Youngstown State scored 13 straight to go up 61-53 with 8:30 left in the game. It was their first lead since the score was 9-8. No worries though, the 'Dons followed on a 15-2 run. Damian Chong Qui scored nine of the points in the five-minute stretch to take a 68-63 lead with just under three minutes remaining.
When the 'Dons needed key points late, it was Chong Qui once again. Up just one possession at 70-67 with under a minute remaining, Chong Qui got his defender in the air at the foul line and sank a jumper to put the Mastodons up 72-67. He added two free throws on the next offensive possession to really put it away.
Chong Qui finished had 15 of his 24 points in the second half. His 24 points stand as his most as a Mastodon. He also added three assists and three rebounds. Anthony Roberts and Jarred Godfrey each scored 11 points. Roberts had a season-high three 3-pointers. Godfrey added eight rebounds and three assists to his box score line.
The 'Dons made seven of their final eight shots from the floor in the first half to take a 38-30 lead at the break. Seven Mastodons found their name in the scorebook in the first 20 minutes.
The Mastodons shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) including 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from three.
Brandon Rush had a game-high 26 points for the Penguins.
Both teams are now 10-5 (2-2 Horizon League).
Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Green Bay on Thursday (Jan. 5) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
