'Dons Fall to Oakland 66-64 in Final Moments

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball was narrowly defeated by the visiting Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 66-64, in Horizon League action on Sunday (Dec. 4) in the Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons got off to a fast start in Sunday's contest, opening the game on a 10-0 run. Shayla Sellers converted an old-fashioned three-point play to open the scoring. Ryin Ott followed with a three-pointer from the corner and then both Jazzlyn Linbo and Destinee Marshall scored layups in transition following turnovers by the Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland withstood the initial surge by the Mastodons, responding with a 14-8 run of their own to close out the first period. While the game remained close in the second quarter, Purdue Fort Wayne never relinquished its lead. The Grizzlies got to within a point, 29-28, at the intermission following a banked in three-pointer by Linda Van Shaik at the buzzer.
Oakland used a 9-0 run midway through the final period to grab a 54-49 advantage. The 'Dons withstood the surge and managed to take a late two-point lead, 61-59, with just 1:21 left on the clock following a pair of free throws by Ott.
Following Ott's free throws, Oakland responded with consecutive baskets on its next two possessions to wrestle the lead back for good in Sunday's contest.
Bromenschenkel and Selllers led Purdue Fort Wayne with 15 points apiece. Bromenschenkel added seven rebounds while Sellers added six boards and three steals. Linbo matched her career-high with 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Ott added 10 points for the Mastodons.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored 20 points off of 22 Oakland turnovers. The Mastodons also outscored Oakland in the paint 32-22.
Sunday's setback dropped Purdue Fort Wayne to 4-5 (1-1 Horizon League) on the season. Oakland moved to 4-4 (1-1 Horizon League) with the win.
The Mastodons will return to action on Thursday (Dec. 8) with a road contest at St. Thomas. Game time from St. Paul, Minnesota is slated for 8 p.m. ET.
