Mastodons Go Toe-to-Toe With Oakland, Fall 58-54

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team went down to the wire with Oakland on Saturday (Feb. 19), but ultimately fell to the Golden Grizzlies 58-54 in the O'Rena.
Fresh off her 33-point performance on Thursday, Sylare Starks led the Mastodons in scoring again on Saturday with 16 points. She went 6-for-11 from the floor. For the week, she averaged 24.5 points with 18-of-31 (58.1 percent) shooting. She was also 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the 3-point line.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, getting five points from Starks, Shayla Sellers and Ryin Ott. The quarter ended on a 5-0 Sellers run, as she buried a triple with 2:37 left and a layup with 1:00 to go in the frame. The 'Dons held Oakland scoreless for the last 4:14 of the opening period.
Purdue Fort Wayne weathered the Oakland scoring storm to end the half, still taking a four-point lead into the locker room. The Golden Grizzlies took the lead for the first time in the second half, rattling off a 20-3 run over the last 6:45.
Using a 9-3 spurt in the fourth quarter, the Mastodons closed the gap down to just two points at 54-52. Starks scored seven of those points. Despite being at arm's reach of the Golden Grizzlies, Oakland managed to hold the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Behind Starks' game-high 16 points, Sellers had 12. Aubrey Stupp had a solid outing of 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. As a team, the 'Dons shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the floor compared to Oakland's 35.5 percent (22-of-62). Oakland's 42-27 rebounding advantage came by way of 19 offensive boards.
The Mastodons continue their record-breaking free throw success, going 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) from the charity stripe. On the year, they are shooting a program-best 80.5 percent.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 9-18, 7-12 Horizon League while Oakland improves to 12-13, 10-8. The Mastodons will be back in action next week for their final weekend of regular season league play. They will host Green Bay on Thursday (Feb. 24) and Milwaukee on Saturday (Feb. 26). The Milwaukee game will serve as Senior Day for Valerie Clark.
