
Coffman, Billups, Godfrey and Pipkins Earn Horizon League Honors

INDIANAPOLIS – The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons took home significant hardware on Monday (Feb. 28) when the 2022 Horizon League men's basketball awards were announced. Jon Coffman was named the Coach of the Year, Deonte Billups was named the Sixth Man of the Year, Jarred Godfrey was selected to the All-League First Team while Jalon Pipkins earned All-League Third Team and All-Defensive Team honors.
Coffman guided the 'Dons to a Horizon League Regular Season Championship in just their second season in the league. The 'Dons are 20-10 and enter the postseason with a nine-game winning streak. This is Coffman's second coach of the year honor, he won the same award in 2015-16 in the Summit League.
Billups came off the bench for the first time in his career in 2021-22 and averaged a career-high 9.3 points. The junior from Moline, Illinois shot a career-best 41.1 percent from three. He concluded the season third in the Horizon League in made 3-pointers with 67. Billups totaled nine games of four or more 3-pointers. Billups is the first Mastodon to earn the honor since Mo Evans was named the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year in 2013-14. This is Billups' second league award of his career. He was named to the Summit League All-Newcomer Team in 2019-20.
Godfrey picks up a first team nod for the first time in his career. He was a third team selection last year and an honorable mention pick in the Summit League in 2019-20. This season Godfrey took his game to a new level with a 60.4 percent true shooting percentage, the best in the league. He ranked fifth in the league with career highs of 4.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Godfrey shot a career-high 38.6 percent from three this season. He averaged 15.1 points per game with a season-high 35 points against Western Michigan.
Pipkins' third team pick and defensive nod are his first career league honors. He finished third in the league in free throw percentage (85.4 percent), eighth in steals (1.5 per game) and ninth in field goal percentage (46.0 percent). He averaged 13.6 points. He has 22 games of double-digit points and seven with 19 or more points. Pipkins has been a key cog in a Mastodon defense which has ranked as the best in the Horizon League.
The Mastodons open the Keeps 2022 Horizon League Championship on Thursday (March 3) in a quarterfinal contest at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The 'Dons are the second seed in the event. Tickets start at $10 and are on sale now.
