Sidney Schiller Leads Mastodons to Five-Set Win at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS - Sidney Schiller had 19 kills and 19 digs on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 24), leading Purdue Fort Wayne to a 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 28-26, 16-14 win over in-state rival IUPUI.
The Mastodons took the first set after jumping out to an 8-2 lead. Iris Riegel had three of her five kills in a row to force an IUPUI timeout. This lead held for the duration, and the 'Dons got a kill from Molly Mirabelli to seal the first. Schiller had six kills of her team-high 19 in the opening frame.
IUPUI went up 17-10 in the second set with a pair of blocks and an ace. The 'Dons held off four set points with two blocks of their own, but IUPUI called a timeout to reorganize and take the set on the next try. The 'Dons held IUPUI to .048 hitting in the second set.
The Jaguars used a 7-0 run early in set three to get comfortable on their home floor. They never trailed in the third from that point on.
The home team reached the media timeout in the fourth set first, but only by the minimum, as they led 15-14.
In the fifth, the Mastodons held IUPUI to .043 hitting, forcing the Jaguars into six errors with just seven kills. The 'Dons went up 7-3, then IUPUI answered and tied it up at 12-all. Riegel had a kill to give the 'Dons match point, then Purdue Fort Wayne forced IUPUI into a hitting error.
Defensive specialist duo Rachael Crucis and LonDynn Betts had 26 and 20 digs, respectively. Alexandra Traciak had three aces and five assists. Taya Haffner had 46 assists with five kills.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 5-8, 1-1 Horizon League, while IUPUI falls to 6-8, 0-2. The Mastodons will return home for a match on Tuesday (Sept. 27), when Green Bay comes to the Gates Sports Center.
