'Dons Among Best At Butler Spring Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team finished the opening day (Monday, March 27) of the Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational two shots back of second in the 11-team field.
The Mastodons' opening round of 276 is a season-best and the fourth-best in program history. The 562 is also the third-best two-round score in program history.
The Mastodons are ahead of five Horizon League teams in the field: Cleveland State, IUPUI, Youngstown State, Green Bay and Detroit Mercy.
Hunter Mefford shot 67-71-138. He is in sixth place through 36 holes. The senior's 67 in the opening round came by way of four birdies and 13 pars. His birdies came on holes three, nine, 11 and 15. In round two, Mefford had eight pars on the back nine. On the front, he dropped in a birdie on hole three, then parred the rest of the way.
Kasey Lilly turned in a 67-72-139 to tie for seventh with Nick Holder. In his first round, he had birdies on three, four, six, 13 and 15 with a bogey-free front nine. In the afternoon, Lilly had a birdie on hole nine, then rattled off 11 pars in his last 12 holes to finish his day.
Nick Holder finished his day with a 1-under 70-69-139. He had a bogey-free, 1-under front nine in the morning with a birdie on six. He had two more birdies on the back nine. In the afternoon round, Holder went 17 holes before his first bogey, turning in two birdies and 15 pars before bogeying his final hole.
Burke Pitz is in 50th place through 36 holes thanks to a 72-74-146. His first round featured a stretch of 11 pars in a row and a birdie on his second hole of the day. He had 14 pars in round two. Pitz had nothing worse than a bogey all day.
Jadden Ousley shot 76-76-152 to take 71st position. He turned in 25 pars.
Reece Compton (71-69-140, T-12th), Jarred Bowser (74-76-150, T-60th) and Jacob Deakyne (80-74-154, T-79th) played as individuals. Compton's 140 was his career-best 36-hole score by a six-stroke margin.
Ball State leads the field with a 276-266-542. Cardinal Carter Smith leads the pack with a 66-65-131. Butler's 560 and Indian Hills' 561 narrowly lead Purdue Fort Wayne's 562.
