FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In front of 1,014 fans, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team defeated Robert Morris 2-0 to open Horizon League play. The 1,014 fans in attendance for the fourth-annual Party at the Pitch set a new home attendance record for the Mastodon women's soccer program.
The Mastodons (4-3-2, 1-0-0) handed Robert Morris (6-1-2, 0-1-0) its first loss of the season.
Samantha Castaneda was tested early, facing five shots on goal in the first 32 minutes. After a wave of Mastodon subs, the 'Dons flipped the field on the visiting Colonials and scored the eventual game-winning goal. After Gigi Ricciardi's shot was saved, Amanda Leonard and Morgan Reitano teamed up to find Mackenzie Evans, who booted a low-roller past the Colonial keeper.
The Mastodons held control of the majority of the remainder of the contest. Twenty minutes into the second half, Madde Elliott sent a ball to Malia Velker on the right wing. Velker then sent the ball into the center for Lauren Klusek who buried a long shot into the goal for the security goal.
The 'Dons nearly needed the second goal to be the game winner, as Robert Morris had a penalty kick two minutes after the restart. The shot was missed high and outside, so the 'Dons escaped with no damage done.
This 2-0 score held through the remainder of the contest to give the 'Dons their first Horizon League win of the season.
Castaneda finished the game with eight saves on 11 shots faced. This marked the fifth shutout for the Mastodons this season.
Prior to Thursday's contest, Jason Burr was honored with a game ball, recognizing him becoming the program's all-time wins leader earlier this season.
The Mastodons will hit the road for a league match on Sunday (Sept. 17) at Oakland to put their 1-0 start to league play on the line.
