INDIANAPOLIS – Four Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer student-athletes have been named to the 2024 All-Horizon League teams, the league announced on Friday (Nov. 8).
Midfielder Juan Romero was selected to the All-League First Team. Defender Andrew Hollenbach was named to the Second Team. Forward Shane Anderson and midfielder Felipe Medina were named to the Third Team.
This is Romero's second career all-league honor. He was a second team pick last year. The senior scored a goal vs. Robert Morris this season and added assists vs. Southern Indiana and Milwaukee. The Mastodons won all three of those games. He started 14 games and played a total of 1,152 minutes. He helped the 'Dons record seven shutouts. He was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23 after leading the "Dons to shutouts of Southern Indiana and Green Bay.
Hollenbach picks up all-league honors in his first season as a Mastodon. The defender from The Woodlands, Texas started 14 games for a total of 1,192 minutes. He anchored a Mastodon backline that recorded seven shutouts. The 'Dons finished the regular season with a 1.20 goals against average. Should the 'Dons finish the season at that mark it would set a new NCAA Division I era program record, besting last season's 1.24 performance. He was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3 after helping the 'Dons give up just two shots on goal in games against Eastern Illinois and Bradley.
Anderson scored seven goals on the season with a game-winning goal at Southern Indiana. The graduate student from Frisco, Texas recorded a hat trick against IU East. He had both goals in the Mastodons' 2-0 win over Milwaukee and also scored against Northern. This is his second career all-league honor. He was an All-Summit League Second Team pick at Oral Roberts in 2022.
Medina, a senior from Arlington, Texas, takes home third team honors in his first season at Purdue Fort Wayne. He had the game-winning goal against IU Indianapolis in the regular season finale, a win that helped clinch a postseason berth. Medina also recorded an assist vs. Green Bay and IU East. This is Medina's second career all-league honor. He was an All-Summit League Second Team pick at Oral Roberts in 2022.
The Mastodons finished the regular season 7-6-2 (4-4-1 Horizon League). The 'Dons will play at Milwaukee on Sunday (Nov. 10) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Horizon League Championship.
