Mastodons Dim Beacons in 16-Point Road Victory

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team earned a 72-56 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday night (Nov. 9).
The Mastodons suffocated Valparaiso in the fourth quarter, holding the Beacons to just 10 points on 25 percent shooting while coughing up nine turnovers. Valparaiso finished with 26 turnovers, the Mastodons' most forced against a Division I team since November 17, 2022. The Mastodons scored 29 points off Valpo's 26 turnovers.
It was a relatively close contest until late. The Mastodons had a lead of 12 in the third quarter, but Valpo snuck back within four midway through the fourth quarter at 56-52. From there, the Mastodons charged through a 14-2 run to ultimately put the game away.
Lauren Ross led all Mastodon scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds. She finished 6-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Amellia Bromenschenkel recorded 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks. Sydney Freeman notched 10 points, three steals, two boards and two assists. Tia Morgan had a similar line of nine points, three assists, two steals and a rebound. Jazzlyn Linbo had seven rebounds.
Valparaiso's Nevaeh Jackson led all scorers with 20 points.
The Mastodons shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the floor and a few ticks better from 3-point. range at 42.3 percent (11-of-26). Valpo shot 21-of-45 (46.7 percent) from the floor and 7-of-20 (35 percent) from 3-point land.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 1-1 while Valparaiso falls to 0-2. The Mastodons are back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 12) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum at 4 p.m. against Defiance.
