Purdue Fort Wayne Hits 16 3-Pointers to Move Past Aquinas

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball hit 16 3-pointers on Saturday (Dec. 14) to knock off Aquinas 115-41 in the Gates Sports Center. The Mastodons' 115 points is the third-most in a game in program history.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to four different scorers early and led for all but six seconds of the contest. The 'Dons registered 25 steals, tying the second-most in a game in program history. The Saints had 36 turnovers.
Sydney Freeman and Taeya Steinauer had five steals each, becoming the first duo to have five steals in the same game since Rachel Rinehart and Josie Fisher in 2015.
Steinauer and Lauren Ross led all scorers with 19 points each. Audra Emmerson and Freeman scored 16 each, Sydney Graber had 12 points in the first start of her career, and Renna Schwieterman added 10 points. All 11 active Mastodons scored at least once.
The Mastodons were at their best in the third quarter when they went on a 33-0 run. In the 7:26 stretch, Purdue Fort Wayne was 11-of-14 from the floor, 9-of-10 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Seven 'Dons scored in the run with Steinauer leading the way with nine. The 'Dons held the Saints to 0-for-10 from the floor and forced them into six turnovers, five of which were live-ball steals.
The Mastodons' 37 points in the third quarter is the most in a quarter since they scored 39 in the second quarter against Great Lakes Christian last season.
While not getting her traditional level of scoring done, Amellia Bromenschenkel added things elsewhere on the court, finishing with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ross hit five of her eight 3-point attempts, bumping her season-long percentage up to 51.2 from beyond the arc.
With the win, Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 7-5. The Saints remain at 7-5 since they played the game as an exhibition. Purdue Fort Wayne has a week off for final exams, but will return to the Gates Sports Center next Saturday (Dec. 21) against Western Michigan.
