FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Five Mastodons finished in double-digits in Purdue Fort Wayne's 77-67 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday (Feb. 18) in Horizon League women's basketball play. The win moves the 'Dons to 7-1 in league play at home this season.
The Mastodons strengthened their hold on third place in the league with their 10th league win. The 'Dons are now two games ahead of Detroit Mercy and 2.5 ahead of Milwaukee and Youngstown State, who are fighting for a spot in the top four to host the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Championship next month.
After opening a 13-point lead in the second quarter, it looked like the 'Dons might cruise to the crucial league win. But a 17-2 Detroit Mercy run followed. Six different Titans scored in the stretch with Detroit Mercy going ahead 40-38. Detroit Mercy wouldn't take the lead to the break, however, as Erin Woodson scored five consecutive points to close the half to give the 'Dons a 43-40 lead after 20 minutes. This included a transition old-fashioned 3-point play.
The Titans never led in the second half, but it was tight until about midway through the fourth quarter. The 'Dons limited the Titans to zero field goals over a six-minute stretch. Meanwhile, Audra Emmerson had seven points in the fourth quarter to help clinch the contest.
The 'Dons nearly put it away in the third thanks to Shayla Sellers hitting a pair of 3-pointers. But Detroit Mercy's Amaya Burch scored eight points in a row by herself to knot the game at 58 with 59 seconds left in the period. She had 14 points in the third quarter alone and finished with 16 in the game.
Amellia Bromenschenkel led the 'Dons with 16 points with five boards, three steals and three assists. Sellers was 5-of-7 from three for 15 points while adding three blocks. Emmerson had 14 points, six boards and three assists. Woodson recorded 13 points and three rebounds. Destinee Marshall finished with 10 points and a team-best four assists.
Purdue Fort Wayne drained 12 3-pointers on 28 attempts (42.9 percent) and finished at 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor. The Mastodon defense forced 17 Titan turnovers which the 'Dons turned into 29 points.
The Titans fall to 15-12 (8-8 Horizon League). The 'Dons improve to 17-10 (10-6 Horizon League). The 17 wins and 10 league wins are the most since the 2010-11 season. The 'Dons are at Northern Kentucky on Wednesday (March 21).
