MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team kept its unbeaten Horizon League streak alive on Friday night (Jan. 31), despite a mighty scare from Robert Morris. The Mastodons pulled away from the Colonials late to win 63-54 and move to 13-0 in league play.
With the victory, Purdue Fort Wayne extended its program record win streak to 15 games. It is the third-longest active winning streak in the country. The Mastodons completed their second perfect month after going unbeaten in December and January.
Robert Morris gave Purdue Fort Wayne everything it could handle for 38 minutes of the game. Jada Lee hit a jumper with 1:55 left to bring it back within a one-point game at 53-52. From there, Jordan Reid took over. She made back-to-back free throws on the following possession, then drove in for a mid-range pull-up to give the 'Dons a five-point lead. After the ensuing RMU timeout, Reid forced a turnover then finished on the other end through a foul to put the 'Dons up seven.
With the game still a two-possession game after RMU converted two free throws, the Colonials picked the wrong players to send to the line. Amellia Bromenschenkel and Renna Schwieterman both drained a pair of free throws to seal the victory for the Mastodons.
The rest of the game was a bit of a grind throughout, but the Mastodons stayed in it with defense and ball control. The 'Dons held RMU to 34.5 percent from the floor and forced 19 turnovers while committing just eight themselves.
Schwieterman finished with a team-high 15 points, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. She added seven rebounds. Reid had 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Sydney Freeman had 11 points on 5-of-11. Freeman had seven rebounds as well. Sydney Graber was key off the bench scoring six points and grabbing six boards (four offensive) in just 13 minutes.
Robert Morris was led by 13 points from Grady Isys.
After their 15th win in a row, the Mastodons improve to 18-5, 13-0 in the Horizon League. The Colonials, who had a four-game winning streak of their own snapped, fall to 9-13, 5-8 in the Horizon League. Purdue Fort Wayne will return home for a three-game homestand against Oakland, Wright State and Cleveland State.
