11/12/2025 10:20:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team will play for a league title for the first time since 1999. The Mastodons erased a two-goal halftime deficit on Wednesday (Nov. 12) against Green Bay and advanced in penalty kicks over the Phoenix in the Horizon League Championship Semifinals. The game goes down officially as a 2-2 tie with the 'Dons advancing 4-3 on penalty kicks after 20 minutes of extra time.
It was a less-than-ideal start for the No. 2 Mastodons. Green Bay's Chris Album converted on a penalty kick in the 10th minute. Seven minutes later Noah Madrigal scored, assisted by Kazuki Okazaki, to put the No. 3 Phoenix up 2-0.
It stayed 2-0 to the break, but the Mastodons weren't scoreless too long after that. In the 48th minute Karsten Ternes scored on a header of a corner kick from Marco Valencia.
The goal seemed to flip the momentum of the contest. The Mastodons earned the majority of chances the rest of the way, much to the enjoyment of the vocal Mastodon fans in the stands.
The 'Dons finally tied it up in the 83rd minute. It was no other than 2025 Horizon League Offensive Player of the Year Shane Anderson. He ripped a shot from more than 20 yards out to tie the game.
Both teams earned a few solid chances in extra time, with Green Bay even hitting the post once. But in the end it came down to penalty kicks. The 'Dons found themselves down 1-0 after the first round. But they wouldn't miss again. Green Bay had shots go high in the third and fourth rounds. It opened the door for the 'Dons. Angel Rodriguez took the Mastodons' fifth attempt and didn't miss. When his shot hit the back of the net, the 'Dons earned their berth in the league title game.
Saturday's league title game at top seed Cleveland State will kick at 1 p.m.
Purdue Fort Wayne is now 8-2-6. Green Bay finishes the 2025 season 9-7-2.
