Nelson Leads Mastodons to 77-68 Win Over Northwestern State

NICEVILLE, Fla. - Alana Nelson scored a season-high 25 points in Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball's 77-68 win over Northwestern State in the third-place game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Tuesday (Nov.25)
Nelson finished 9-for-14 from the floor (64.3 percent), 2-of-5 from the 3-point line (40 percent) with five free throws. She added seven rebounds and four assists, both team-highs.
Purdue Fort Wayne led wire-to-wire in the contest. The Mastodons led by as many 16.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 6-0 lead and finished the first quarter on a 5-0 spurt to enjoy an 11-point lead at the first break. The lead ballooned to 14 by halftime thanks to Nelson creating a 5-0 run by herself in the last 77 seconds. She hit a 3-pointer and a layup. Ella Riggs played a big role too in the first half, scoring 11 of her 12 before heading to the locker room.
After the break, Northwestern State pushed back with a 27-18 quarter, cutting the Mastodon lead to as few as five. Purdue Fort Wayne responded quickly into the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run in which four different 'Dons scored. This put the Mastodons back up 15 and out of reach for the final four minutes.
Nelson's 25 points led the Mastodons, while Riggs (12), Jordan Reid (11) and Rylee Bess (10) joined her in double-figures. Vernell Atamah led the Demons with 27 points.
The Mastodons scored 25 points off the Demons' 22 turnovers. The 'Dons led in bench scoring 27-4. Purdue Fort Wayne hit 10 3-pointers for the first time this season.
The Mastodons improved to 4-3 while Northwestern State fell to 3-4. The Mastodons will visit Bowling Green on Sunday (Nov. 30) for a 2 p.m. date.
