'Dons Fall to Bellarmine in Five-Setter

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a five-set contest 14-25, 25-15, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10 to Bellarmine on Saturday morning (Sept. 20).
The Mastodons played two sets of strong offensive volleyball, hitting .464 in the first and .308 in the fourth. Those numbers were in large part to Trinity Rye, who had four kills on eight errorless swings in both frames.
Rye finished with a team-high 17 kills with a .227 hitting percentage.
The Mastodons had a 4-0 run midway through the first set that had two aces from Rye. This put the 'Dons up 14-10. After the 19-14 point, the Mastodons rattled off six in a row, finishing with two kills in a row from Mya Plemons.
The fourth set was similar, as the 'Dons had a 6-0 run to go up 12-5. The Knights cut the lead to 18-14 with a 4-0 run, but Purdue Fort Wayne had a 6-1 finish to the frame, including a solo block from Plemons on set point.
Bellarmine jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set, which put the Mastodons behind for the duration. The 'Dons cut the deficit to two, but the Knights answered with four of the last five.
Haiden Means had 44 assists and six digs. Rye had a double-double of 17 kills and 10 digs, both season-highs. Becky Barrett had 16 digs. Plemons had nine kills and seven blocks.
Natalie Bland had a match-high 18 kills for the Knights.
Bellarmine improved to 6-6. Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 2-8. The Mastodons will play Toledo at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 20).
