NORTH EAST, Pa. - Behind five top-five performances on Monday (Oct. 12), the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team has a 26-shot lead for first place at the Evann Parker Memorial.
Hunar Mittal led all players in the 33-player field with an opening round of 71. Her 1-under featured five birdies with four of them coming on the back nine. After three bogeys on her first five holes, she had just one the rest of the day, and all five of her birdies came after that point. Mittal was 3-under on the back nine. She has at least a four-shot lead over everyone else in the field.
Louise Ekesall was the second-best for both the Mastodons and the entire field. Her round of 75 was highlighted by birdies on four, seven and 17. She finished her day going 1-under over the last five holes.
Lillian Gottman shot 76 and is in sole possession of fourth place. She started with a birdie on 17, then found another birdie on 12 later on. She wrapped up with two pars in a row.
Lillie Cone and Emily Gottman both shot 80, good to tie for fifth. Cone had a birdie on nine, which came in the middle of a seven-hole bogey-free stretch. Gottman birdied 17, which set her up to go even over the last six holes.
Amaya Wade played as an individual but is still in the top-10 in the field. Her 81 was good for eighth place and featured birdies on five, six and 13. She was 1-under over her last three holes.
The Mastodons shot 302 as a group, 26 shots better than the host Mercyhurst squad.
The final round of the Evann Parker Memorial will begin on Tuesday morning (Oct. 13).
