Mastodons Roll to 2-0 League Start With Win Over CSU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne's defense led the Mastodon women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-13, 19-25, 25-18) over Cleveland State on Saturday (Sept. 26). Mya Plemons led the Mastodon defense with a career-high 13 blocks.

It was Alumni Day at the Gates Sports Center, with dozens of former Mastodon women's volleyball players in the crowd. Prior to the match, the Mastodons honored Madi Wurster, who passed away in December 2025. She was heavily involved with Erin's House after graduating from Purdue Fort Wayne in 2024. Plemons' 13 blocks are the second-most in a four-set match in the country this season and fourth-most by a Mastodon in program history. She was a force at the net all afternoon long, as she was at least partially responsible for 13 of the Mastodons' 18 blocks. She had four in the first set, two in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth. She helped hold the Vikings to a meager .073 hitting percentage for the afternoon, including a putrid -.148 in set two.

The Mastodons picked up where they left off against the Vikings after picking up a five-set win on Friday (Sept. 25). The 'Dons jumped out to a 4-2 lead over the visitors, but CSU came back and eventually led 14-10. After trading a few points, CSU led 17-14 before a 5-0 run for the 'Dons that featured back-to-back blocks from Plemons and Trinity Rye. From that point, the Mastodons use kills from Rye and Plemons with another two blocks from Plemons and Avery Parris to take the set.

The second set was nothing spectacular until late as the 'Dons needed just five kills to win the frame. Leading 16-13, Bella DiBuono headed to the service line and never left. The 'Dons strung together a 9-0 run to win the set that featured two aces from the sophomore, a kill from Rye and two more blocks from Plemons.

It was back-and-forth in set three with 14 ties and six lead changes. Up 20-18, CSU used a late 5-1 push to extend the match.

The Mastodons cruised in set four thanks to a 10-1 run early to lead 12-5. Guess whose fingerprints were all over that run. Plemons. She had three blocks and a kill in that run. Lili Smith added two aces in the front end of that run. The Vikings showed a bit of fight later on, but the 'Dons led by as many as 10 on two occasions, a margin too large for Cleveland State to overcome.

Riley Rosneck led the match with 16 kills on a .308 hitting percentage. Becky Barrett had 13 digs, also a match-high. DiBuono had a career-high four of the Mastodons' 10 aces.

Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 8-7 and 2-0 in Horizon League play with the win. Cleveland State fell to 3-10, 0-2 in league play. The Mastodons will return to action next weekend (Oct. 2-3) at Robert Morris in some more HL play.
