Rang comes to IPFW after spending the last nine seasons as a head varsity basketball coach, and coached at various levels for 18 seasons. Most recently he was the boys basketball coach at South Side High School, where he led the team to a 13-8 record, a nine-game improvement from the previous season record of 3-16, the second best improvement in the IHSAA last season.
"Even though Andy won't be out on the floor, we will be able to pick his brain and bounce ideas off of him from his lengthy coaching experience," said Paul. "He is knowledgeable, and he understands the game because he has been a head coach. He understands how to handle people, parents, and difficult situations. Having him around, we are going to be able to free some things up, give him other responsibilities, and allow him to run with them."
"I am excited about the opportunity to work with Coach Paul and the staff," said Rang. "I want to be able to help out behind the scenes, to free up the other coaches to do more on-court things. I am looking forward to learning and understanding what goes into the day-to-day operations of a college basketball program, and getting my feet wet in the college coaching profession."
Prior to coaching the varsity boys at South Side, he was the head girls coach, where he coached the school for five seasons, and left the program as the Archer's all-time winningest coach in school history with a 98-24 record. His 2008 squad advanced to the Final Four in the Class 4A State Tournament, and the Elite Eight in 2007 and 2009. For his success, he was chosen as the coach for the Girls East team in the East/West Indiana All-Star Game in 2008, and the Indiana girls basketball coach for the Nancy Rehm Indiana/Ohio All-Star Game in 2007.
"At South Side we had a lot of success," noted Rang. "On top of that success, I had some wonderful players that went on to play Division I basketball. That experience, being able to coach them at that high level, and see them go on, has prepared me to come in here and help any way I can at a Division I program. Just having competed at that high level is going to help me with my experience here."
