Former Purdue University and Bellmont High School basketball standout Kip Jones is in his sixth season as an assistant coach and fifth season as recruiting coordinator for the IPFW women's basketball program.
In his second year as recruiting coordinator for the Mastodons, Jones’ class included Ariana Simmons whom was named the Summit League Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness. The 2014-15 class included a pair of Preseason First Team All-State selections in Allyson Bunch and KeShyra McCarver.
During his time with the Mastodons, Jones has helped guide the squad to two postseason appearances in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). He has coached nine All-Summit League selections at IPFW, including two-time Player of the Year Amanda Hyde.
A native of Decatur, Jones had been the head girl’s basketball coach at South Adams, where he was in charge of rebuilding the entire Starfire program all the way down to the elementary level.
"Kip put himself in a position to be a college coach when he was hired as the head coach at South Adams," IPFW head coach Chris Paul commented. "He did a very good job there of rebuilding the program. I knew right away that when he applied that he was someone that I would have to take a hard look at because of the things he has done as a coach. When you have a chance to bring in someone who was a McDonald's All-American from the area, who went on to play for a very good Purdue squad, you have to jump on it. He brings a different element to the table for us."
As an athlete at Bellmont, Jones was the runner-up for Mr. Basketball in 1985 and scored over 1,600 career points, earning a spot on the McDonald’s All-American team that same season. After his four-year career with the Boilermakers, he played professionally in Hong Kong and Turkey, while getting invited to training camps with the Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks.
Jones was a member of two Big Ten Championship teams at Purdue University. He served as a team captain for the Boilermakers during the 1988-89 season under a talented coaching staff that included Gene Keady, Steve Lavin, Bruce Weber, David Wood, and Kevin Stallings.
He graduated from Purdue with a bachelor’s degree in 1990, while earning his master's degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan in 2001.
Jones resides in Fort Wayne with his wife Jill.
