Marcie Alberts arrived at Purdue Fort Wayne as an assistant coach in the 2013-14 season and remained on staff when head coach Niecee Nelson took over in May of 2016. She was promoted to first assistant prior to the 2018-19 season. Alberts was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 2016, in recognition of her exceptional achievements as a player in both high school and college.
Alberts' teams at Purdue Fort Wayne have been known for their academic success, as in 2019-20, her team had the highest GPA in the department with a 3.59 GPA in the fall semester. Each of the 12 student-athletes on the team had over a 3.0. Under her advisement, Anna Lappenküper became a Purdue Fort Wayne Exemplar Student in 2019-20, one of just nine in the university.
Alberts has coached a pair of 1,000-point scorers in her time at Purdue Fort Wayne. The first, Haley Seibert went on to join Alberts on the coaching staff for the Mastodons. The second, De'Jour Young, scored 1,197 points from 2015-19. Alberts also coached one of the most elite shot-blockers and rebounders in program history. Sh'Toya Sanders averaged 1.9 blocks per contest in her two years in Fort Wayne after transferring from Chicago State. In just two seasons, Sanders was second on the all-time blocks list with 89, and her 1.9 per game is first in program history. She averaged 8.1 rebounds per game, which is the most by a Mastodon in the Division I era, and third-most overall.
In her first season as an assistant, she helped lead the team to the Women's Basketball Invitational after a 15-15 record.
Alberts came to Purdue Fort Wayne after spending five years as the head coach at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. In her five seasons with the Student Princes (2008-13), she handled all aspects of coaching: on-court instruction, recruiting, game plans, fund raising, scheduling, scheduling of travel, and community service. Under her guidance, two Heidelberg players reached the 1,000-point club. She also coached a pair of All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) performers as well as multiple Academic All-OAC student-athletes.
Prior to arriving at Heidelberg, Alberts was at Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio from 2001-08, compiling a 117-45 record. During her tenure there, she led the Red Riders to three conference and district championships, and a state quarterfinal appearance. She was a three-time district and conference Coach of the Year honoree. In 2006, Alberts was selected as a coach for the Ohio North-South All-Star Game.
Alberts spent the 1999-2001 seasons serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Toledo, where the Rockets won the Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2001 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
A four-year letterwinner and team captain at The Ohio State University, Alberts was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 1997. While with the Buckeyes, she became one of the most prolific three-point shooters in program history. During the 1996-97 season, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point field goals made and set at the time a conference record for 3-point attempts in a season. As a sophomore, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point shooting percentage. She set a then school record in 1996-97 for 3-pointers in a season with 86, and stills holds the record for the most 3-pointers by a senior as well as free throw percentage by a senior. Alberts left Ohio State second in 3-pointers made, 3-point attempts and free throw percentage, fourth in 3-point percentage and ninth in assists.
After graduating from Ohio State, Alberts went on to play for the now defunct Cleveland Rockers during the inaugural season of the WNBA in 1997. She received a bachelor of science from Ohio State and a master's degree in recreation administration from Toledo.
Alberts resides in Fort Wayne with her husband, Rob, and their two daughters: Jordyn and Madysen.
