Indianapolis, IN - The Mastodons improved to 4-3 after defeating the IUPUI Jaguars Tuesday night in Indianapolis. IPFW topped the Jaguars 59-50. This is the Mastodons first road win since defeating the Jaguars in the 2004-05 season.
"I am really proud of the ladies," said Head Coach Chris Paul. "After two tough losses and then going on the road to play IUPUI and playing them really well was great. We controlled the game, went toe-to-toe with them. This was a huge step for the program."
IPFW jumped out to a 6-0 lead just two minutes into the game after Samantha Edwards connected on a jumper. IUPUI fought back to take their only lead of the game after going on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes.
Juliane Höhne hit a jumper to tie the game up once again at the 14:54 mark. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle connected from the arc to put the 'Dons ahead by three, 11-8.
The Mastodons never looked back from there, going on a 7-2 run to go ahead by six with under ten minutes left in the half. IPFW hit their first double-digit lead after a three pointer by Hannah Thieke put the 'Dons up 24-13.
IPFW held a double-digit lead for the next four minutes before IUPUI took it to nine after a good three pointer. The half would finish with IPFW ahead, 31-22.
"We came out to a good start, 6-0. We executed well and our defense was solid. The ladies forced 17 turnovers and took a 14 point lead. I was very pleased with the half."
IPFW would take an eleven point lead shortly into the second half off a layup by Lieselot Malfait. The Mastodons continued to dominate, taking a sixteen point lead over the next four minutes.
The Mastodons would take their largest lead of the game after a shot by Edwards put IPFW up by 17. A 23-6 run by IUPUI would tie the game at 50 with just over four minutes left.
IPFW would rally back, going on a 9-0 run to end the game, 59-50.
"We continued what we had in the first and took it through to the second half. I have to give IUPUI credit, the fought hard and knocked down shots to tie the game up with four minutes left. Their crowd really got into and fed them and kept our hands full."
"This is what we've been stressing - that teams will make runs and we need to figure out how to win. Holding them scoreless the remainder of the game was huge."
Lewis-Carlisle hit a double-double and led all scorers with 10 boards and 18 points. She was 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. She added two steals.
Ashley Johnson connected for 11 points and was 3 of 5 from the line. Johnson had three assists and four steals, playing every minute of the game.
