Cardinals Breeze Past 'Dons in Season Opener
Fort Wayne, IN - Ball State jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, dropping the Mastodons, 5-1 in the season opener for both women's soccer squads Friday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Cardinal senior midfielder Amy Holst opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play, converting a corner kick from junior midfielder Angie Heyera.
Ball State made it 2-0 at the 38:37 mark as IPFW turned the ball over inside the 18, and Katelyn Alexander made them pay. Alexander one-timed a blast past IPFW keeper Shannon Lynn.
Just 2:54 into the second half, BSU struck again. Junior forward Sarah Leibel threw aside an IPFW defender just inside the box and found the back of the net.
In the 74th minute of play, junior midfielder Laura Bandy gave Ball State a 4-0 advantage with a blast from 40 feet out that found the upper right corner of the goal.
Trailing 5-0, IPFW got on the board at the 79:00 mark. Off of a corner kick from senior Kristy Arnett, sophomore midfielder Heather Currie turned and fired from the top off the box past Ball State keeper Rachel Murphy.
That is as close as the 'Dons would get, falling by four. IPFW returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a match at Central Michigan. Game time is 2pm.
