Fort Wayne, IN - It took 45 minutes to get warmed up, but when they did, the IPFW women's soccer team exploded for six unanswered goals against NJIT on Thursday night in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Mastodons (1-2-0) fired off 46 shots in the match, 21 of those on goal.
After a scoreless first half, IPFW got on track early in the second half. At the 47:45 mark, freshman defender Danielle Luther launched a shot from 25 yards out the just made it under the crossbar, giving IPFW its first goal of the match.
From there, the flood gates simply opened. Junior defender Brittany Saylor happened to be in the right place at the right time, grabbing a rebound and parking a shot past NJIT keeper Bruna Lotufo.
IPFW made it 3-0 at the 67:33 mark on a pretty feed from sophomore midfielder Kendra Schenk to junior defender Jenny Thornton. Her one-timer beat Lotufo to the far side.
Schenk got her second assist of the match as she and freshman forward Cristena Auton each headed the ball to sophomore midfielder Chelsea Smith, who was all alone in the crease with nothing but an empty net in front of her. It was Smith's first collegiate goal.
At the 81:04 mark, it was Luther setting up junior midfielder Korin Maciulski from about six yards out. Maciulski's blast ripped past an outstretched Lotufo.
Just a minute and a half later, IPFW completed its scoring barrage as Schenk got a perfect feed from Thornton and finished it with a one-timer of her own.
While she gave up six goals, Lotufo made 15 saves in the contest.
IPFW goal keeper Shannon Lynn didn't face a shot on goal the entire evening. In fact, the IPFW defense allowed the Highlanders (0-2-0) only one shot attempt in the match.
NJIT will stay in Fort Wayne and face Utah Valley State tomorrow night at 6pm at Hefner Stadium. IPFW will face Utah Valley State Saturday night at 7pm.
