Fort Wayne, IN - The #7 IPFW Mastodons topped #8 Penn State, 3-0 in front of a raucous crowd of 1,394 at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center on Saturday night.
In a very close match, it was the Volleydons sweeping last year's national finalists by the scores of 30-28, 30-28, and 30-25.
In the opening set, it was some uncharacteristic sloppy play from the Nittany Lions that allowed IPFW to go on a 6-2 run and open up a 17-12 lead.
IPFW junior All-American C.J. Macias registered three kills in the Mastodons four final points to give the 'Dons the opening set.
In the second set, it was PSU senior outside hitter Alex Gutor who kept the Nittany Lions close with consecutive kills that tied the match at 10.
But, IPFW senior middle hitter Vitor Oliveira put down a pair of kills late in the set to help the 'Dons take a 2-0 lead.
IPFW had little trouble in the third.
The Mastodons put the ball in the hands of Macias and he registered three straight kills, from the back row, to give the 'Dons the sweep.
Macias led all scorers in the match with 18 kills and 18.5 points.
Oliveira and senior outside hitter Josh Collins each added seven kills.
Gutor led Penn State (1-1) with 15 kills and 17.5 points.
With the win, IPFW improves to 2-0. They will return to action, on the road, next weekend with matches at Loyola-Chicago and Clarke.
