Fort Wayne, IN - The #7 IPFW Mastodons used a huge game-three rally to sweep Stanford, 3-0 on Friday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons topped the Cardinal by the final scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 31-29.
The opening set was a see-saw affair with each squad playing to their strengths.
Stanford would get freshman opposite Evan Romero off early. Romero registered five kills and staked the Cardinal to a 15-12 lead.
IPFW countered with All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias. Macias staked the 'Dons to a 24-22 lead with the final of his 10 first set kills.
Still, the Mastodons needed a strong finish and got it from the serving of junior opposite Brock Ullrich, and the hitting of junior middle hitter Josh Stewart.
Ullrich drilled a service ace and Stewart put down two balls to give the 'Dons the first set.
IPFW ran into some serving trouble in the second set.
The Mastodons committed eight service errors and had to overcome a four-point early deficit.
The Mastodons battled back, and a 27-all, used three straight Cardinal attack errors to take the second set.
In the third, Stanford jumped out to a 19-13 lead on a kill by junior middle hitter Matt Ceran.
The Cardinal looked poised to take the third, but IPFW's defense blocked three-straight balls to tie the match at 26.
Stanford held two game points at 29-27, but a kill by Macias and a block by Stewart tied it at 29.
After erasing the two-game points, Stewart put a ball down setting up Macias for the match winner.
Macias led everyone in kills with 20. He also dug up 17 balls for a double-double.
"Big Red" Stewart had 16 kills and eight block assists. He also slugged .652 for the match.
Ullrich and senior Josh Collins combined for 14 kills opposite Macias. Collins added 10 digs, and Ullrich chipped in three block assists.
Stanford (0-8) was led by Ceran with 14 kills. Romero added 13.
IPFW (5-0) out-hit Stanford .285 to .151.
Both teams will face each other in a rematch Saturday night at the Gates Center. First serve will be at 7:00pm.
