Fort Wayne, IN - Stanford hoped that a trip to the Midwest would cure what ails them. Unfortunately for the Cardinal, #7 IPFW wasn't in a giving mood. The Mastodons swept Stanford for the second straight night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
Bolstered by the incredible hitting of junior middle hitter Josh Stewart, the 'Dons cruised to the sweep by the scores of 30-26, 30-28, and 30-24.
Stewart was just percentage points off of the IPFW school record for hitting percentage in a match. The current record, held by assistant coach Ryan "Rock" Perrotte is .850 (vs. Ohio State '99). Stewart was 14 of 17 with no errors for .824.
Early in the match it was the active arm of IPFW's All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias that paced the 'Dons to the first set win.
Macias put down seven of his 15 kills in the opening game.
The second set was a tight affair with each squad slugging identical .481's.
Stanford freshman opposite Evan Romero followed up his seven kill performance in the opening set with seven in the second set.
But, it was Macias drilling a ball down from the back row that gave IPFW set number two.
In the third, the Mastodons never trailed as junior opposite Brock Ullrich continued his hot hitting.
Ullrich posted a hitting night of .550 and joined Macias and Stewart in the double-figure kill column with 13.
Macias led the 'Dons with 15 kills and three aces for 19.5 points.
Romero led everyone in the kill column with 17.
Stanford (0-8) got 12 kills from sophomore middle blocker Brandon Williams.
IPFW senior setter Colin Lundeen did a nice job of running the Mastodon attack with 44 assists. He also chipped in two service aces.
With the win, the 7th ranked Mastodons improve to 6-0.
They return to action on Friday night (2/1) hosting #13 Loyola in a rematch at 7:00pm. IPFW topped Loyola, 3-2 in Chicago, Illinois on January 19.
