Muncie, IN - Ball State used a match-high 19 kills from outside hitter Nick Meyer and eight service aces to upset No. 6 IPFW, in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match, Friday night at Worthen Arena.
Ball State won by the finals scores of 30-27, 30-24, 19-30, and 30-16.
IPFW had leads in both of the opening sets, but the Cardinals stormed back in each to take a 2-0 set lead.
IPFW rebounded, and at 15-all in the third, went on a 15-4 run to cut the Cardinal set lead to 2-1.
Ball State snuffed out the IPFW comeback by out-hitting the 'Dons .444 to .100 in the fourth and final set.
Cardinal outside hitter Nick Meyer led all scorers with 26.0 points on 19 kills and five service aces.
Mark Rumschik joined Meyer in double-digits with 12 kills.
IPFW was led by junior outside hitter C.J. Macias with 17 kills. He was the only 'Don in double figures.
Junior middle hitter Josh Stewart registered nine kills and had an amazing 10 block assists.
Neither team hit particularly well in the match. Ball State (8-5, 3-0 MIVA) slugged at a .185 clip. IPFW hit .130.
The current weekend swing doesn't get any easier for the Mastodons (9-2, 4-2 MIVA). IPFW, who is in third place in the conference, will travel to No. 8 and conference co-leader Ohio State for a Saturday night match.
Ohio State handed IPFW its first lost of the season, 3-1, back on February 9 at the Gates Center.
