
#5 IPFW Remains Undefeated

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons moved to 3-0 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with a 3-1 win over visiting Lewis University, Saturday evening at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
The fifth ranked 'Dons topped the Flyers by the scores of 30-21, 30-22, 26-30, and 30-21.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the opener on a kill by junior All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias.
Later in the opening set, junior middle hitter Josh Stewart gave IPFW a 25-20 advantage with one of five first set kills. His final of the opening stanza gave IPFW the nine point win.
In the second set, it was the serving of junior opposite Brock Ullrich. The 6-6 righthander blasted four service aces. After two sets, Ullrich had posted five service aces and the Mastodons slugged .500 to take the second set, 30-22.
Head Coach Arnie Ball decided to tinker with his lineup for the third and got mixed results.
Lewis picked it up also and jumped out to a 13-6 lead on a kill from sophomore opposite David Kelnhofer.
Senior opposite Jerrod Quillen was one of the positive results for Ball. Quillen put down a pair of balls in a four-point sequence, but the Flyers were able to hold for the 30-26 win.
In the fourth, Ball reverted to his staring lineup and the 'Dons responded.
Ullrich snapped off two more service aces and put down a pair of kills.
Macias kept pounding kills down from the right side and on a service ace by senior setter Colin Lundeen, IPFW took the match, 3-1.
Macias led the 'Dons with 18 kills. He also chipped in eight digs.
Middles Josh Stewart and senior Vitor Oliveira had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Lundeen registered a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs.
IPFW, as a team, ripped 15 service aces, led by Ullrich with seven.
The Mastodons (8-0, 3-0 MIVA), who hit .500 in the second and fourth sets, finished the match with a slugging percentage of .284.
Lewis (7-2, 2-2 MIVA) lost for the second night in a row. They were led by junior outside hitter Jared Dayton with 12 kills. He also had three aces.
The Flyers hit .122 on the night.
IPFW will return to action, hosting #11 Ohio State, Friday night at 7:00pm.
