Fort Wayne, IN - No. 10 Ohio State rode the arm of senior Dan Meske's 21 kills in a 3-1 upset of No. 5 IPFW, on Friday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
It was OSU's first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match. The Buckeyes won by the final scores of 24-30, 30-25, 30-22, and 30-26.
IPFW ran out to a 1-0 match lead as junior All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias put down six kills, and the 'Dons blocked five Ohio State attempts.
The Buckeyes (9-1, 1-0 MIVA) countered with a 9-3 run to open the second set.
The 'Dons drew to within two at 24-22 on a kill by junior middle hitter Josh Stewart, but IPFW couldn't overcome seven hitting errors allowing Ohio State tied the match at one.
In the third, OSU opened up a 16-10 lead on a service ace by junior Daniel Mathews.
IPFW never really threatened in the set, and on a kill by sophomore John Albertson Ohio State had a 2-1 lead.
OSU looked like they would run away and hide with the fourth set after a kill from senior outside hitter Sam Stevens made it 18-12, but IPFW dug in and tried to send it to a fifth set.
After a pair of kills by Macias, and three straight from Stewart, IPFW trailed by only one at 21-20.
Senior Jerrod Quillen tied it after he put down a free-ball.
But after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Robbie Klein, Ohio State had a lead they would not relinquish again.
Macias led all in the match with 22 kills. However, he had an uncharacteristic 12 errors. He also led the 'Dons with nine digs.
Stevens added 12 kills for Ohio State .
A big factor in the match was the hot serving of OSU. The Buckeyes fired off 11 aces in the match, with Mathews slamming four.
IPFW (8-1, 3-1 MIVA) will now be off until Feb. 17 when they travel to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on the Lakers of Mercyhurst College.
