Long Beach, CA - The No. 11 IPFW men's volleyball team finished off the 2007 Long Beach State/Active Ankle Classic with a 3-1 win over the No. 1 team in the NAIA, California Baptist, Saturday night in California.
The Mastodons stopped a very dangerous Lancers team by the scores of 30-27, 24-30, 30-23, and 30-28.
How dangerous are the Lancers? They own wins over No. 3 BYU and No. 6 Penn. The Penn State win came in a sweep last night.
The first set was a slugfest, with the 'Dons out-hitting Cal-Baptist .571 to .483.
The Mastodons hit an impressive .621 in the third set, finishing the night at .430.
The junior tandem of C.J. Macias and Brock Ullrich each pounded out 17 kills to lead IPFW. Ullrich had just two errors in his 25 swings for a hitting percentage of .600.
Junior opposite Jason Yhost, back in his native state of California, put down 13 balls and had six digs.
Junior middle hitter Josh Stewart led a defensive charge with 10 block assists.
IPFW had to overcome a match-high 32 kills from Camaroon native Donald Balaiba. He was joined by Yauki Sun (18) and Urs Gunthor (10) in double figure kills.
With the win, the 'Dons improve to 12-6.
They will continue their current six-game road swing, next weekend with matches at St. Francis (PA) and Penn State.
