Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW baseball team dropped its first home games of the season on Tuesday afternoon at Mastodon Field. Western Michigan grabbed a double-header sweep of the 'Dons, 5-3 and 7-2.
In each ballgame, IPFW took an early lead but couldn't sustain.
In game one, the 'Dons got on the board in the second on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Brett Merkley. The Mastodons pushed a second run across the plate on a bases-loaded walk by freshman second bagger Mark Carden.
IPFW held that 2-0 lead until the top of the 4th inning. Broncos' third baseman Matt Abro chased home WMU's first run with an RBI single to left field.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the 6th inning, Western took the lead in a big way. IPFW starter Stacy Herrold, who had kept the Broncos in check, was touched up for a three-run shot by designated hitter Nathan Marquardt.
The 'Dons would get one back in the home half of the frame on a solo blast by Merkley, the first of his collegiate career, but it wasn't enough as WMU added an insurance run in the seventh for the 5-3 win.
In the night cap, IPFW opened the scoring in the first on a two-run single by first baseman Nick Millspaugh.
Western Michigan countered with two of their own in the top of the second on a two-run single to left from the bat of shortstop Zach Gentile.
WMU (11-18) got a single run in the fifth, and then it was Marquardt again with a two-run homer to left in the sixth to seal the deal.
With the losses, IPFW falls to 6-26. They will return to action Monday (4/23), hosting Grace College in a 3:00pm double-header.
